Art Heim, visual artist/ photographer
I propose to craft a set of matted 11 x 14 inch photographs that depict the wild and unique environment of the Okavango Delta region of Botswana. This area represents one of the few truly unique ecosystems on earth where a mix of African wildlife and human culture co-exist and thrive under the pressures of outside human influence. The work will consist of original images captured while living and working in Botswana as a US Peace Corps volunteer. While serving in Botswana I had the opportunity to travel extensively into the bush and experience the challenges faced by a developing country in protecting and exploiting a natural resource that is unique, fragile and irreplaceable.
My primary objective and interest in the Articulture project will be to share through photography a window into the African hinterland. Through my images I hope to develop an understanding within our community of this truly wild place and the amazingly gentle and friendly people who peacefully co-exist and thrive in this environment.
